Basic Course

Basic Course: Introduction in Evidence-Based Medicine


It is an introductory course about the principals of EBM. Ideal for professionals keen to become familiar with methodology, practice and critics related to the evidence analysis.


Target group: It is aimed at physicians, medical students; healthcare companies’ staff and medical specialty societies with academic, economic or scientific interests.

Advanced course

Advanced course in Evidence-Based Medicine

 


It is a complete course for professionals keen to use the techniques of EBM based on the integration of scientific evidences with the clinical experience and the individual evaluation of the patient. At the end of the course the student must be able to: 

 

  • Recognize the Evidence-Based Medicine as a viable, useful and effective way to improve the medical practice, based on results of high level research.
  • Elaborate specific questions liable to be answered by scientific ways for the several clinical situations.
  • Carry out an efficient search on electronic databases for medical manuscripts on diagnose, treatment, prognosis and etiology.
  • Understand the organization and functionality of electronic databases.
  • Evaluate critically the medical manuscripts of diagnose, treatment, prognosis and etiology.
  • Evaluate critically the clinical practice guidelines.
  • Recognize the importance of the systematic reviews for the medical knowledge.
  • Perceive and apply the sources of information with the best evidences.
  • Translate knowledge about EBM into day to day professional practice.
  • Recognize the limitations of the evidences in the clinical routine.

The classes are divided into 4 parts, with computers being used just in the first part:

 


Module I – Scientific bases and database search


Length: 8 hours

• Elaboration of a clinical question – basis for the search in the literature

• Search in the electronic databases

 

 


Module II – Critical evaluation of the literature


Length: 8 hours


Subjects:


•  Critical evaluation of articles about risk and etiology
•  Critical evaluation of articles about diagnosis
•  Critical evaluation of articles about screening
•  Critical evaluation of articles about treatment
•  Critical evaluation of articles about prognosis

 

 


Module III – Integrative studies


Length: 8 hours

• Systematic review of the literature
• Meta-analysis’ graphics
• Systematic Reviews: methodology
• Synthesizing evidences
• Importance of Economics in Healthcare
• Types of pharmacoeconomic studies:
   - Cost-effectiveness
   - Cost-minimization
   - Cost-utility
   - Cost-benefit

 

 


Module IV – Sources of information for clinical decision making


Length: 8 hours.
